From CAD to chair back

Every medallion starts as a CAD drawn to your chair's dimensions and is embroidered exactly to it. Shown: custom character medallions of the five elements (metal, wood, earth, water, fire), CAD and finished hand embroidery.

How medallions fit on the fabric

Our medallions are designed for chair backs. We plan them around the 54" fabric width, leaving the plain fabric your workroom needs to cut and upholster the embroidered medallion. For most projects, two medallions across the width, typically about 13" × 14" each, work perfectly. Send us your chair dimensions and we'll show you the most efficient layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is this for me?

How do embroidered chair backs work?

We embroider your medallions directly onto our base fabric, typically two across a 54" width. Your workroom simply cuts them out and upholsters the backs of your chairs.

Tell us about your chairs
Can I use my own design?

Yes. Choose one of our embroidery patterns, send us your own design, or share your inspiration and our art team will create a custom CAD design for you and your client to approve.

Browse our embroidery patterns
Will it fit my chairs?

Your workroom can send us the chair back template or dimensions, or we can make a mock-up CAD that they adjust. Either way, the medallion is sized and placed for your chair.

How big can a medallion be, and how many fit across the fabric?

Usually two medallions fit across a 54" width, each about 13" × 14". Our embroidery machines work within a 40 cm (about 15¾") vertical repeat. Depending on how much plain fabric your workroom needs around each medallion, we can also fit one large or three smaller medallions per width.

Make it yours

Can I choose the thread colors?

Absolutely: mix and match any colors. Choose from our embroidery thread card of rayon threads, and if you need something special, our factory has thousands more shades available.

What does hand embroidery add?

Hand embroidery gives a glamour and vibrancy that machine embroidery can't match, like the character medallions shown above. It adds cost and lead time, so it's worth it for statement pieces.

Which base fabric can I use?

Choose from our base fabrics, or send us a sample of the fabric you like and we'll suggest our closest alternative. We accept customer's own material (COM) only on the rarest of occasions.

Hospitality & contract

Is the embroidery durable enough for chairs?

Embroidery typically tests at 5,000–10,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs, which is suitable for chair backs. For seats and outside backs, we supply the matching plain fabric, or choose from our vinyl collection.

Can the fabric be FR or stain treated?

Yes. We can fire-retardant and stain treat the fabric with the treatment your project specifies.

Ask about a contract project
Can I order spare medallions?

We recommend it. Spares from the same production run match exactly, so they are ready for repairs or extra chairs later.

Planning your order

What's the minimum order?

25 yards, which is 50 medallions (2 per yard).

How is it priced?

Per medallion. Send us your quantity, chair dimensions and design, and we'll quote you.

How long does it take?

For custom chair backs, most of the time goes into design: our art team creates a CAD, and once the CAD and pricing are approved, we make a strike-off for your approval. The strike-off takes 3–4 weeks. Very custom projects can take longer at this stage. After the strike-off is approved and we receive your PO and deposit, production takes about 8–10 weeks; hand embroidery takes longer. Shipping time is extra: smaller orders usually come by air, which adds about 1–2 weeks. Sea freight is typical for large-volume orders and adds about 6–8 weeks, but costs less. FR treatment, when needed, adds about 1–2 weeks plus local transit. Working to a deadline? Talk to us early and we'll do our best to meet your delivery date.

Can I get a sample?

For our standard designs, trade accounts can order our standard sample. For a custom design, the strike-off is your sample: a real embroidered piece for your approval before production.

Can chair backs match my drapery?

Yes. Our chair back medallions pair with our embroidered borders, so the same pattern and color palette can run across the drapery and the chairs.
